Old San Juan

The walled city at the tip of the San Juan islet. Five centuries of streets, the forts of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and colonial townhouses that are among the most distinctive homes on the island.

The city

Old San Juan received its formal name in 1521. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the San Juan Historic Zone in 1972 and designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2013. About three quarters of the city walls survive.

La Fortaleza, built from 1533 to 1540, is the governor's residence and is described as the oldest executive residence in the Western Hemisphere. With El Morro, San Cristóbal, and the walls, it forms the La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site, inscribed as Puerto Rico's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Living here

Buyers come for walkability, architecture, and the life of the old city. Homes range from restored townhouses around interior courtyards to apartments in converted buildings. Parking, deliveries, and noise vary street by street.
